Requirements Analysis for Digital Marketing

Digital Marketing (SEO, Optimization, whatever you call it) is not a ‘packaged diet’. You have to work with a strategist to get the right things done.

Like Software Development process, Requirements Analysis is the first step in Digital Marketing; it should be. If you are preparing Digital Marketing Strategy for your own product, your company or a client, you have to define the goals very clearly and then map the goals to definite action items.

I always had problems with SEO Packages. Even when it was predictive on how to rank in Google, I never believed that a premade SEO Plan can be helpful. What works for Jack might not work for Jill! I always asked my clients “What do you want to achieve with your website?” The answer determines what to be done for the client.

I remember speaking to an entrepreneur who just formed a startup; they were selling discount medicine cards in Canada. “We want to rank in the first page of Google”, they said. “Why?”, I asked. They had no answer. I helped them to find the reasons – “Probably, you need leads, you need visitors to your website?” They agreed. “Then why don’t you start with PPC and as the organic traffic increases, you can reduce your PPC budget and focus more on organic growth.” Organic growth does not come overnight.

A person with abilities to identify the business requirements should work with the client to understand what they want. And then, come up with the right Digital Marketing Strategy to achieve the targets in next 3 months, 6 months or 1 year. Often the requirements are mentioned in client’s own term – the analyst has to translate them into technical term and map each of the requirements to specific action items.

Here is a use case that explains what I said above.

Assume someone wants to generate leads through website. They want the visitors to fill out a small form and that’s it. The website is new and the company is targeting 1000 monthly signups in a year.

That’s the requirements written in English. Now, you have to interpret in your own language – something like this:

  1. The website needs more visits
  2. The visitors must fill out the form

If I translate the requirements to technical term; it will look like:

  1. Generate traffic
  2. Enhance usability
  3. Optimize for higher conversions

Then we need to set action items that will help achieve the goals:

1. Generate traffic: There can be two avenues; organic and paid. Sketch a plan to get the website indexed and keep improving ranks in search engines. You need to focus on both on-page and off-page stuff. PPC can help to generate traffic from day one. No matter how old your website is. However, you might need to create landing pages.

There has to be a daily, weekly and monthly list of deliverables. Regular monitoring will help you identify whether the progress is up to the mark.

2. User experience is important; Google prefers the websites that offer good user experience (I am sure Google has its own way of measuring it). This is a continuous process and you can always make it better – monitor user behavior, collect data and make changes based on them. There are tools that help you implement the best practices.

3. Conversion optimization is a vast subject; based on your Sales process, you have to formulate the right conversion optimization strategy. For the example we are considering, placement of the form, message around the form, font, color of the font etc. can lead to higher conversion. The optimization process for Organic and Paid traffic will be different.

There will be a list action items under these three categories. A strategist will make the list depending up on the present condition of the website and then move forward.

Product Companies Prefer In-house Digital Marketing Team. Question Mark.

SEOMoz dropped SEO to be Moz! Does it indicate that time has come for all to drop SEO? A big question mark indeed!
According to me, SEO has evolved and become something more than link building. SEO was never about link building; and this time, Google has made sure that the fact goes deeper into people’s mind – that’s it.
So Digital Marketing is the right word to use. Now, the question is: Whether product companies (including startups) prefer in-house digital marketing team or not? Some may; some may not – let me share my experience of interacting with some CEOs who head tech startups.
Darker Side of Outsourcing the Digital Marketing Department
  1. How can the agency understand my product? Someone who does not know about my product, can never market it.
  2. Even if someone at the agency spends some time to learn about my product, what is the guarantee that person will not leave? (When asked that the same thing might happen for in-house team also, they said they would develop parallel knowledge leaders).
  3. Most of the agencies are not honest and do tricks to boost rank (to fool clients) which might have adverse effect on the website in the longer run.
  4. After 6 months if the agency does not deliver – who will lose money? We.
  5. We just don’t want to outsource – we hate the word ‘outsource’! We would rather build a team!
Brighter Side of Outsourcing the Digital Marketing Department
(mostly my inputs)
  1. You get started immediately – no need to build a team to get leads online.
  2. Select an ethical agency and you are done – there are plenty of ways of finding competent digital marketing agencies.
  3. Have someone in your team who understand digital marketing and can coordinate with the agency. Let this person become the knowledge leader from your side (domain knowledge and marketing knowledge). Outsource the execution part – lesser pressure on you.
  4. Team building is expensive and time consuming. It is very difficult to get talented resources in this field who will work for a product startup (in case).
  5. If the in-house team does not perform you will be in a greater mess; so let the activities be handled by those who know it (make sure they know it).
So equal votes on both the sides. Actually, if you go out and check, you will find both types of product companies – those who outsource and those who do not outsource. However, there is a gap; and agencies can take the call and bridge the gap.
What do you think?

Senior SEO Consultant Candidate – A Real Story

Why this story. Being a Senior SEO Consultant and Strategist, I keep getting a lot of CVs from people who are looking for jobs in SEO, PPC, Content Writing etc. Recently I received a CV, in which the candidate ‘claimed’ to be a Senior SEO Consultant and explained that how good he was at On-page, Link Building, Article submission etc. Is this what we expect from a Senior SEO Consultant Candidate?

FYI, I am endorsed for a lot of skills, which are not directly related to SEO.

[Flashback] May 2, 2005 - Started my career in SEO

May 2, 2005 - I joined my first SEO job at a Kolkata based product company. Vikas Kedia of Stanford was the CEO. Shimul, a great friend and very knowledgeable person, and Biplab joined us on the same day. Anirudh (co-founder of Debate.fm) joined us few days later; I think after a week or so. After so many years, I am still in touch with Shimul and Anirudh – we often get together to organize events in Kolkata. I was lucky to get Aji as my mentor there. Needless to mention that I am still in touch with Aji heavily (we work at TechShu together).

Back in 2005 we started with very basic things; the concept of contextual and natural link was coming up then. However, it was Aji who taught us why SEO is more than SEO! Surprisingly, many SEO consultants cannot imagine this even now.

As you grow with time, your responsibilities keep changing. A junior SEO consultant candidate is more into execution; on the other hand, a senior SEO consultant candidate is more in to planning and strategy making. At the same time, it is the job of senior people to get things done. That’s where I am now.

Junior Vs. Senior SEO Consultant Candidate

Most of the junior candidates usually think that it is easy to become the boss. However, as you move to a senior position, you realize that it is much simpler to follow instructions rather than giving instructions. A senior SEO consultant candidate has to come up with strategy, communicate with the clients, work with the team to make them understand what to be done, train the team members if required and finally get the things done on time maintaining the right quality!

And things become tougher when the success of the project depends on the people who are not in your direct control. For example, as a senior SEO consultant you might need to work on various aspects of SEO and Digital Marketing such as Content, Design, Social Media, Development etc. Now, those departments are often distributed under several heads and experts. You can send requisition, but you cannot control the team.

But nothing is impossible; as a junior SEO consultant needs to learn how to execute, a senior SEO consultant candidate should learn how to get things done. Now, you have to learn something which is not directly related to SEO. Here comes the knowledge of management!

As a senior SEO candidate, it is expected that you will be an expert in all the parts of SEO and Digital Marketing. Your profile, your portfolio would be the evidence. But how can one judge that you are a good manager too?

[Coming back to present] A senior SEO consultant candidate should be a good manager

Managing a team is not all about giving instructions and getting things done – it is about how you get it done keeping the team spirit bright, on time and adhering to quality. Some management knowledge would be of real help here.

SEO and Digital Marketing has always been my strength, to be honest. My thorough experience of PPC has helped me get the Googles AdWords Certification as well. However, the thing that I should learn to become a complete senior SEO consultant candidate is the management tricks. To solve this problem, I have recently started following the Open Courseware of MIT, Harvard and other reputed schools. I am also reading a lot of books (special thanks to Aji) to learn how it works at management level. I am sure, that some day, I will make it there too.

Role of a senior SEO consultant candidate – My perception

Here is what I think (written from the perspective of a service based digital marketing or SEO agency).

  1. Understand what your client needs – they might tell you that they need SEO, but probably PPC is the best channel for them – so explain it to them. Even to do SEO, you have to understand client’s business properly. You can’t be just SEO anymore and Rand confirms that
  2. SEO is essential for all – organizations that are looking for Sales, Growth or Branding – SEO is essential for all of them. This should be properly communicated to the client
  3. Next is keyword research and competitive analysis. While doing keyword research, it is important to find the intent associated with the keywords. For example, an ecommerce website will only be benefitted if it targets keywords with buying intent, not research intent.
  4. SEO audit, or a through health check of the website is very much essential (assuming the client has a website, if the client is developing a new website to do SEO, as a senior SEO consultant candidate, you must get involved in the development process). There are 75+ parameters that need to be checked.
  5. Gone are the days of bulk content writing and link building. This is the era of creativity (thanks to Google’s updates). With content, you have to come up with a great strategy. Something that will be helpful for the readers. Then links will come automatically and that is what Google expects you to do.
  6. Local SEO is another important part; for small, local businesses such as restaurants, spas, salons etc. local SEO can be of great help. And through Google Places optimization, websites might make it to the first page of Google smoothly.
  7. Social signals – this is another important part of SEO these days. Social signals such as comments, likes, shares etc. help search engines get clue on how good the content is. Obviously strong social signal goes in your favor.
  8. Responsive Design – I would make it a part of SEO. A lot of people are searching web from mobile devices; this would help you to tap them.
  9. Track and measure – as a senior SEO consultant you have to constantly track your activities, measure ROI and understand which activity is giving you the best result. A brief understanding of Google Analytics is compulsory. One strategy might not work for all – unless you test, you cannot identify what will work for who.
  10. Get things done – the strategy that you prepare for the clients should be executed. A lot of SEO consultants are good at strategy level, but unless you execute your plan, it is of no use. So you have to build a team and train them on how to do things. How to map their activities to the client’s goal.
  11. Finally, a senior SEO consultant candidate should be in constant touch with the clients, educate them, help them understand the process of SEO. This will help the organization in the longer run.
  12. Follow SEO communities and experts to upgrade your knowledge constantly.

(Feel free to comment below if you think I have missed anything)

Therefore, friends, who claim themselves to be Senior SEO consultant candidate, think before adding this title before your name. Years of experience does not make you senior; it’s your knowledge that makes you senior.

Why I never wanted to be in Service Industry - SEO

Reasons are many:

- It is difficult to work with clients who have just NO IDEA about SEO but they think that they know a lot. Since they believe that they know a lot, they are not ready to listen to your advice. And they find mistakes in whatever you do.

- When you are offering SEO Service to hundreds of clients, it is difficult to be imaginative and sometimes impossible to offer high-end work. For a startup it is a big challenge.

- Even when you make it clear to your clients that you will be reporting monthly they call you everyday to know when they are going to get leads.

- Even when you can foresee huge opportunity with a website, you have to follow what your client believes best for the site.

- Then you will start developing your own website based on the concepts you like, and suddenly feel that you are actually not working on your ideas because some urgent work has popped up from your clients’ side and the entire team, including you, has got busy with that. This will repeat again and again.

- You will have a tough time when it comes to build up a good SEO team, especially if you are in Kolkata. If you hire freshers, train them and build a team the smart guys will leave to start their own company; others will be caught doing freelancing during office hours.

- You will want to give more time to your clients’ projects, so that you can do something really good for them. Sometimes you will come up with EXCELLENT ideas; but you will not get time to implement the same as you will be busy with business development, client handling, corporate communication, billing, recruitment and all.

You must be thinking how bad a person I am – only negative words about the industry! What will one do with their SEO knowledge then? There are 2 options:

If you understand SEO and other online marketing strategies and want to do creative work, find a job where you have to work for a specific product or brand. Yes, I am taking about in-house job.

If you believe that thousands of SEO companies are there, what is the use to be another face in the crowd – then do something different!

  • Think of some revenue generating models that can work online.
  • Build the resource and promote it online.
  • You can start an online media house with various online channels which are active.
  • You can earn money from blogs.
  • Start an affiliate website.
  • Start a lead generation website.
  • Create a website, make it popular and then sell it off.

However, few things are required to be successful in this business model:

  • Initial investment so that you can survive as a startup; if you start offering service to cover your back, just remember, it may be a vicious loop for you.
  • A good team (friends preferred).
  • Dedication and motivation.
  • Ideas!

Disclaimer: My opinion; written from a startup’s perspective, sorry if it hurts you.

The person sitting beside you

...matters a lot. It is true that I love to travel alone. You may think that I want to travel fast and that's why I want to travel alone - NO. When I travel, whether it is coming home from Raniganj or simply commuting to my office, I get a chance to be with myself. If I find a familiar face in the bus, I generally feel bad because I have to talk to them and I have to sacrifice a golden opportunity to spending some quality time with myself.

But that did not happen today. One of my office colleagues was with me when I went to Jadavpur from Airport this evening. And surprisingly I revealed this softspoken and introvert person to be a great speaker! I am glad that he was with me; we discussed a lot of things and shared many ideas.

If the person sitting beside you can add some value to your thoughts, the journey becomes enjoyable. Same holds true for your professional life. The fact can be compared with an SEO company (@Amrita don't curse me for citing this example). A good SEO leader may not be able to deliver quality output if he is not working with a dedicated team. A talented writing team and a passionate marketing team are essential to make the projects successful. The person sitting beside you matters a lot!

Same is true for life. I need good people around me so that life becomes easier. I am really thankful to those who have made my life beautiful. The person sitting beside you matters A LOT!

The Other Side of SEO India

My previous post on SEO Jobs in India was an outcome of an observation. I had been watching SEO vacancies abroad for quite some days and I posted my observations only. Fact.

It’s a micro-post that hardly makes up to 50 words. When I wrote this, I did not realize it would fetch me so much traffic! Webwings is appearing on 3rd page for the keyword "seo jobs in India" in Google. Bliss.

The post has received some comments and all are spam. I was annoyed, I was angry. But I decided to take a different approach. I kept those spam comments and started putting my own words below them with the hope that spammer would come back someday and feel guilty; however, I do not expect anything from the bots. Lol.

However, the thing that pains me more is the face of Indian SEO – chances are high that those spammers found my blog through searching. If they are searched for ‘SEO Jobs India’ OR ‘SEO India’ chances are high that they are a part of this industry! And what they did? They spammed. Shocked.

I know there are a lot of good people in this industry. Still few bad apples are damaging the goodwill. When we are planning for Kolkata Bloggers’ Meet to take the industry from next tier these people are continuing to spread spam comments. Poor.

SEO Jobs in India and Aborad - The Basic Difference

In India: Employers look for SEO specialists with the knowledge of Link Building.

Abroad (USA, UK): Employers look for SEO specialists with programming knowledge to modify web pages, implement tags.

Note:
This is my observation after reviewing some seo job vacancies in India and Abroad. Don't file a lawsuit if you disagree.

SEO in India is being disrespected

Indians are Spammers: Really!

A lot of people BELIEVE that Indians are spammers!

Kamanashish wrote the topic on seomoz blog and the debate started. I got surprised to learn that a lot of people really believe that Indians are spammers when it comes to SEO.

I am sure, Kamanashish tried to alert people about cheap services. He also tried to conscious the good people of Indian SEO industry. When I go out to market to buy some golden jewelry and somebody offers me say Rs.100/gm, I do not buy it. I am an informed consumer.

Then how could someone expect Oscar Wilde standard when somebody agrees to write 500 words article for just $2.

However, most buyers believe that it is not right to blame the buyer, but we Indians should set up some standards internally. Now, spammers are everywhere – not only in India. Is a rule-book enough to stop them doing wrongs?

But, there should be a checking system. A trusted institution OR an authority site should be there through which such transactions should be done. Difficult to implement, but we need it. Otherwise SEO in India will never get the value it deserves.

Applying Web Copywriting Tips

Since I started writing for web, I surfed a lot to find good Web Copywriting Resources. I looked for tips, suggestions and techniques on the internet. I found quite a few and always kept those in mind while writing for web.

Unfortunately, sometimes it becomes so difficult to develop content maintaining all the standards. Here is a catch 22 that I have experienced:

Good copy writers always suggest to write in short. They say to proofread your copy again and again to find out if you can cut some unwanted words and make the content smaller and precise.

At the same time, there are clients who ask web content writers to write 600 word articles and they are very strict at word count. Writers are paid on the basis of word count only! I find it really painful. When the subject does not demand more, why should I write a lengthy article?

Hence, I have to compromise with the standards. I cannot apply the web 2.0 copywriting techniques as I need to meet the word limit! It hurts!

But, last week I got the chance to write for my company’s website. And I applied all the content writing standards:

  • I wrote just as much as needed, did not care about word count
  • Did proper keyword research and put related phrases in the copy
  • Added bulleted lists to make it easy for the readers
  • Added proper headings
  • Innovated some catchy phrases
  • Proofread the copy again and again to cut unnecessary words

I was really happy with this work. I am sure that not only the readers, but search engines would rate the page high. It will take no time to appear in the SERP as soon as the page goes live.

But some webmasters and web businessmen still follow the older notions. They believe that more content you put on your page, higher is the chance to get a rank. They impose the idea on content writers when it comes to write articles, press releases or web pages. As a result, a lot of garbage dumps on the internet. I really don’t know where we are heading; I am searching for a solution, if you have got any, do comment here.

It’s all about the right word

Internet stores and retrieves information in Text format. All the Search Engines are Text-based. Even Image or Video Searching processes rely on text used in the title of the image or video file.

Thus when you decide to sell a product on the internet, it is really important to identify the word or phrase used by most searchers who intend to buy the product. Unless you associate the most-used textual phrase with your product selling page, you cannot reach to prospective buyers.

Remember Google Image Labeler? To enhance Google Image Search, perhaps, Google introduced the Image Labeler. It is a funny game. Two players are given one photograph. The players can be anywhere on the earth (obviously with at least a PC and Internet connection)! Both of them are asked to tag labels to the image. As soon as one of your labels matches with one of your partner’s you get some points and pass to the next image.

At the end of the game you can see the words that came in your partners mind when you were shown a sports car. But what you cannot see is the phrase used by most players to identify the sports car. If you are selling sports car online, you could surely be benefited from it!

Now the gap has been bridged by Vertical Leap, the UK based Search Engine Marketing Company. They have introduced SEO Keyword Quiz which displays an image and asks you to enter the phrase that you will use to search for the thing.

Once you submit your words it displays a list of keywords used by visitors to identify the same product.

That definitely helps you decide which keyword best describe the product.

However, here also you need to depend on the Quizmaster; the site does not help you select the picture of your business item. You cannot be sure whether the SEO Keyword Quiz would ever show photograph of terracotta product that you sell online. Hence if your product is not listed in their database, you need to select your keywords by your own. Anyways, with so many exciting tools Vertical Leap would surely come up to enhance the application and more functionality to it.

SEO: Keep it In-house or Outsource?

What will YOU do? If you wish to add some more zero’s at the end of your profit by marketing your business through Internet, would you set up a whole new SEO section or you would outsource the job?

Surprisingly I had the opportunity to work under both the systems. Both have their own set of advantages and limitations. My previous post On an attempt to classify Content Writing, I partially touched this topic. With In-house SEO, people get more time to master the subject. But people working in SEO companies need to handle a number of websites all the time; so they hardly get time for excelling a single domain.

This temporary deficiency of domain knowledge sometimes affects the quality of work. A writer who has been creating web content only for a Credit Repair website for 2 years obviously knows more about the topic than the writer who writes on various topics everyday which may or may not include Credit Repair. The same is true for Link Builders, Bloggers and Social Media Marketers. (I will contradict this paragraph very soon; stay tuned!)

Then why do the SEO firms exist? There are advantages of Outsourcing too! Most of the SEO companies have their own networks; network of blogs, websites, bookmarking sites and all. These networks are kept for their clients. Some SEO firms may own good web directories. If you assign your link building task to them, you get good one way links from those places easily.

If you target 100 links per month, you can appoint 4 different SEO companies to do link exchange on your behalf. This way you not only make use of various networks of websites and blogs, but you avoid leaving any link building pattern that Search Engines can blame you for!

Wright or Rong – Google knows

From the conversation I had with WebProWorld members, it seems that KEYWORDS Meta Tag has lost its past glory! Most of the members agreed to the fact that Search Engines are not paying much attention to KEYWORDS Meta Tag and some of the posters commented that they have stopped using Meta Keywords for their websites!

"I am also concerned that every search engine or other search application can index and rank my sites properly. I do not do SEO only for the major search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN and Ask. I try to satisfy all of them! Major and minor."
– by Webnauts

Sounds to be a good advice. Webnauts uses Meta Keywords; if it is not going to help, then it's not going to harm you too!
  • Keyword in URL
  • Keyword in Title
  • Keyword in Meta Description
– these three are most relevant according to today’s SEO workers. Logical enough. These three factors appear in the SERP and Search Engines highlight the keywords if they are found in these three parts of a web page. So better Description and better Title could help you rank higher. If your site URL does not contain your main keyword, don’t worry much. Work a bit on content and try to get some good back links or even internal links with the targeted keywords.

However, I will be using Meta Keywords for all my projects. You never know what Google has for you in its store!

PR Power

PR's OR Press Releases, have a huge potential which is often higher than the extent you can think of. When I started writing PR, one or two of them were rejected by eminent Press Release Distribution Sites as they did not meet editorial guidelines. At that time, I did not have a clear idea about what is a PR and who are the readers of PR. I simply took up a casual article writing approach.

As you know, I always learn from mistakes, I started reading editorial guidelines thoroughly. Once I got accustomed with the technicalities of Press Release writing, I always had luck getting them passed through the editorial panels.

All of them brought my sites good links and visitors. I only used these PR’s as SEO instrument and it was powerful indeed. However, I must say, I did not understand a quarter of possibilities associated with PR until recent. I had to write Press Releases on the event of releasing a FileMaker based software. I developed the PR, got it validated by the software developers for technical errors and then started submitting it to different PR Distribution sites.

Additionally, I sent copies of them to a lot of tech-journalists and editors. Surprisingly, some of the good online tech magazines covered it. And within one week of our product launch, news about us covered first and second page of SERP for our main keyphrases!

Conclusion: PR is an Online Marketing tool with multiple benefits and long-term advantages if used properly. PR is written for Press people, so apart from submitting it to the distribution sites, it is important to send them to media directly.

SEO Mantra

When Sumantra asked me "Do I need to know basics of SEO so that I can design more search-engine friendly templates?" I kept quiet for some time. I was thinking about Aji’s post – SEO a curse for Content Writers. But, as I think that people involved with Web Development should know basics of SEO, my answer to Sumantra was "Yes".

Here is what I told to him:

Since Search Engines are nothing but artificially intelligent software programs, they cannot sense if a design is good or bad. But, as a Designer you should read the pages from Search Engines’ perspective.

Suppose your site has a good, really good content. Now, while designing the site you place the navigation panel at the left hand side. What will happen now? Search Engines, while crawling the site will read the content of the panel (that may contain product list, site navigation, sponsored ads, AdSense and all) first and then go to the main content. So your main keywords are pushed down if they are not there in the panel.

Now, some SEO checklist makers believe that early appearance of keywords in the page makes positive result. And you are losing it there!

I showed Sumantra some Tools that output how Search Engines read the text of a page. Needless to say that Sumantra was happy with it.

Do you think I should say something more to him? Feel free post your feedback.

Where SEO ends

I am a supporter of SEO, white hat for sure. However, I must admit that SEO has certain limitations. Initially, when a site launches, some SEO campaigns like link development, article submission, directory listing are good. But once your site start receiving steady traffic, you should concentrate on another vital point, i.e., CONVERSION.

Just think, your site is receiving thousands of visitors, but too few of them are buying your product! With analytics, it’s no more difficult to know the source from where these visitors came and the keywords that took them to your site. I am sure that you will be surprised to see that most of visitors, who left your site immediately after landing, were looking for the main keywords of your site!

This is the time to start analyzing visitors’ behavior deeply. I am not saying that you should stop doing SEO. No, not at all; but you should testing various things with your site just to see how your visitors react to those changes. Now, go through the images below:

Yes, Google has also started doing it! I am sure the setting that receives maximum hit will be finalized OR, they may display various messages randomly.

You can also do similar things with your site. Change the background color, edit the CALL FOR message, place a different button and see if the changes result positively or not. However, all these things should be done in a thoughtful way, perhaps with the help of experts. Go through what Sumantra Roy, CEO, Conversion Multiplier has said at:
